Evaluation

For this project we had to create a peice of music and also film and edit a music video to accompany the music, researching into differn't genres and codes and conventions.

We had to work in groups of three and each take part in the differn't roles avaliable to us - Director, Producer, Camera Person and Editor.
I was given the responsibility to do the strip boards, power point presentation for the pitch and film most of the production, other than the performance elements that we had shot.

I used EP scheduling to produce the strip boards, I used this because it was a quick, easy and professional way to produce these, I also felt comfortabel using the programme.

I filmed most of the location shots at felixstowe beach, we chose this location because it represented what we wanted to come across in the video. We wanted the video to be about someone who is lonely, and in the winter felixstowe beach comes across as a lonely place - where everything is shut down.

My favourite shot throughout the whole video would have to be the shot of Terri drawing a smiley face in the sand (00:17) this is because it is one of the most creative shots in the video - meaning the shot isn't perfectly framed in the center, it's just off-center and we havn't focussed on Terri being in the whole shot. However, one of the more pooer shot's in the video would have to be at 01:48. Personally I wouldn't of used this shot in the video as it looks quite sloppy and not like any of the other performance stuff. Because of the angle this shot was shot at the stage and floor can be seen. If I could re-do this music video, that would be one thing that I'd make sure didn't happen again.

Also I like the black and white effect on each clip, it gives the sense of memories, and also add's a more arty feel to the video. Although looking back I do think that alot of the footage we had shot could of made it into the video to add a more variety of shots, also I believe that the editing could of been cut more effeciantly to the beat.

From making this video I have learnt more camera techniques than anything else as usually I shy away from camera work, I have also learnt further how to produce strip boards and how to fill in EDL sheets.

I believe that our ideas came across well in our finished peice. From hearing our audience feedback it was clear that our narraive came through to our intended audience and so did the mise-en-scene.

The majority of the audience feedback we recieved was good, on initial impressions they liked the revelation of the characters at the end - how you see who you assume to be singing, but you don't know who is until the very last shot. They also liked the "moody" choice of location, cinematography and someone also said that it was "very atmospheric"

However, the weak areas that the audience picked up on included:
The dog shown confussed them - they didn't know why it was there or why it was suddenly speeded up when no other footage is.
The shots were too long (however some said that if the shot's wern't as long it would of taken away some of the atmosphere and meaning to the video)
And also the shot where the floor is seen in the performance (mentioned above)

Overall they said that the use of cinematography was good, there was a bit of a discussion about the dog and in the end the feedback on this came back 50/50, half liked it, half didn't. They also like the 4th shot, where Terri is standing on the concreate block looking out into the sea and they also like the shots where pictures are drawn in the sand. And also all the shots we're composed well.

The one comment that stood out when it came to talking about Mise-en-scene was "Felixstowe beach has never looked so good." They agreed that the location was right for the song and that the props - although however simple were needed although the production wouldn't of had the same feel as it does.

They also said that they didn't see much of the band, and would of preffered it if there were shots of Terri Lip-syncing on location.

Originally we had thought of more locations and more of a storyline, however because of the weather the week we were filming we had to make do with one location. Although I believe that having this one location helped settle the storyline.

If I had the chance to re-do this project I would of concentrated on the editing a bit more, making sure that the shots cut to the beat, and not as many of the same type of shot used.
